Sport put Palmeiras to the sword in the Copa do Brasil
May 1, 2008
A Romerito hat-trick helped Sport Recife dump competition favourites Palmeiras out of the Copa do Brasil on Wednesday. 0×0 from the first leg in São Paulo, a score-draw or win would have seen Palmeiras through. As it was, Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s men suffered their worst defeat of the season going down 4×1 in the Ilha do Retiro. See the goals here.
On a chilly evening in São Paulo, Corinthians warmed up more than 50,000 of their fans by overturning a 3×1 deficit against Goiás. The Parque São Jorge team pummelled the side from Goiânia 4×0 in the Morumbi. The damage was done in the first-half when Corinthians put away all their goals in the space of thirty minutes.
Rank outsiders Corinthians Alagoano earned themselves a dream tie with Vasco da Gama after the Maceio club went through on aggregate against Juventude. The one-time third division side are currently restricted to appearances in local tournaments in the northeast of Brazil. But the club was once the home of Barcelona’s Deco.
Elsewhere, Danilinho spared Atlético Mineiro’s blushes by grabbing the only goal against Náutico. And Vasco saw off Criciúma and São Caetano put paid to minnows Atlético-GO.
Quarter-finals (May 6th/7th/8th)
Corinthians x São Caetano (Morumbi)
Atlético Mineiro vs Botafogo (Mineirão)
Internacional x Sport Recife (Beira Rio)
Vasco x Corinthians AL (São Januário)
