Kléber Pereira and Madson enjoy the moment

Palmeiras went out of the Campeonato Paulista following a 2-1 loss to Santos in the Palestra Itália. Three players were red-carded - including the brainless Diego Souza who nearly caused a riot after booting Santos’ Domingos. The Palmeiras number seven got into a harmless jostle with the bulky centreback. Referee Salvio Spinola rashly flashed a red card at both players and then Domingos collapsed after a push by Souza. The midfielder then lost it completely and had to be wrestled away by team mate Marcão before jumping back on the pitch to land a hefty kick on Domingos! Enjoy the highlights here

So Santos blitzed Palmeiras in the other semifinal despite a horrible mistake by Santos’ keeper Fabio Costa in letting Pierre’s shot go through his hands and legs. Of course the game was practically over by then anyhow but the absence due to injury of Edmilson was really felt as Palmeiras defense, especially it’s central defense looked very vulnerable. Not only was Edmilson missed but the absence of Cleiton Xavier also greatly effected Palmeiras’ midfield. Is Diego Souza crazy or what? A talented player but one who as he proved on Saturday can easily go over the edge. I prefer Cleiton Xavier anyway. I think CX is a young Deco in the making. Diego Souza, another in a long line of talented but troubled attacking midfielders.
