Grêmio trounce Corinthians
Mano Menezes’ return to the estádio Olímpico ended in a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Grêmio. Corinthians were blown away in the first-half, conceding three goals and having Jean sent off for two yellow cards. Grêmio’s tight marking and pacey attacks, meant there was no space or time for any of Corinthians creative players. Ronaldo, who was booed throughout the game, never got a look in. Corinthians were there for the taking but Paulo Autuori’s team let them off the hook in the second period as the home side inexplicably sat back. See the highlights
Atlético Mineiro returned to the top after beating a second-string Cruzeiro 3-0 in the Mineiro. Júnior, Alessandro and Éder Luís got the goals. See them here
Internacional messed up away at Atlético Paranaense going down 3-2 after they had taken the lead through Nilmar.
Vitória clocked up the biggest score of the day humiliating Santos 6-2 in Bahia. The result probably spells the end of Wagner Mancini at the Vila Belmiro. The coach joined Santos from Vitória earlier this year. See the highlights
Palmeiras moved to 3rd after disposing of Náutico with ease in the Palestra Itália. Maurício Ramos, Willians, Amero and Pierre were on target. Márcio Barros got Náutico’s first goal in five games.
Reigning champions São Paulo were held 2-2 at home by Flamengo. Ricardo Gomes’ side had to come from behind twice to earn a point in the Morumbi.
São Paulo, though, were denied a late penalty when Washington appeared to be pulled down in the area. See the highlights
Fluminense dropped into the bottom four after losing at home to Santo André. Wellington Monteiro’s own goal has put coach Carlos Alberto Parreira’s job at risk. Flu join Botafogo, Náutico and Avaí in the relegation zone.
