Spurs are holding talks with Internacional over their defensive midfielder Sandro Ranieri.
Representatives from the North London club are in Porto Alegre and the fee is expected to be around €16 million 30% of which will got to an investors group that part own the player.
Ranieri is Brazil’s Under 20 captain but only has only been part of the first team at Inter since the start of the year.

In a recent statement, Inter said that they don’t want to sell the player this year (heard that before though). However, Inter’s president, Vitório Piffero, did say that the club has not received an official offer for Ranieri.

I don’t know anything about this player. How highly rated is he in Brazil? What are his strengths and weaknesses? Would he be suited to the English Premier League? Is he a holding midfielder like, say Guardiola? Or is he more of a tigerish defensive midfielder like Gattuso? Does he speak English? Would he be able to get a work permit? Thanks to anyone who can answer any or all questions.

I’m an Internacional fan. Sandro is a superb midfielder. Perfect tackles, strong, tall and great technique. And only 20 years. One more loss, after Nilmar…

Another talent moving too soon. I had high hopes for Sandro but I fear his career will go off the tracks at Spurs.
If he moves -which I think he will – hopefully he challenges Palacios strongly for that defensive spot in the center of midfield.

I see the work permit as being the problem although Man U never seem to have any problems with their young Brazilians. There is an exceptional talent loophole for want of a better description but i guess Spurs will have already sounded the UK Border Agency out if this link is true.
Personally, I don’t think it will happen as we know Harry Redknapp wants players who will have minimum adjustment time to the frenetic pace of the EPL. From what I read Spurs priorities are a LW, a CM and cover for CB/LB. The Honduran guy, Chavez is on trial this week for the CB/LB spot, there’s a young Spaniard in the frame for the LW spot so maybe Sandro has been invited for a trial? Redknapp won’t sanction a move for someone he hasn’t had a good look at.

We won’t get him due to work permit problems. We couldn’t sign Diego from Santos as he hadn’t played the requisite number of games for Brazil (60% of the previous 17 games I think), and he would definately be described as an exceptional talent. Porto were able to sign him in the end on account of his Portuguese extraction.
It will take too long to sort out the issues with his image rights, as Premier League rules now forbid third party ownership of players since the Tevez/Mascherano situations.
The E16m fee is also extremely optimistic for a player that has no guarantee of surviving in the toughest league in the world; just look at Gilberto, and he was a World Cup winner.
Based on what I have read about him, he seems quite an exciting prospect, but going on Spurs’ previous track record of signing players, they only really seem to take a chance on young domestic players, with Gio and Taraabt being the exception. It would be folly to spunk that much cash on a player that a) would not necessarily be a gauranteed starter and b) a success in the league.
Would sooner the money be spent on someone like Micah Richards. Scoring goals is not our issue. We still look shakey at the back. This much was evident on sunday against West Ham, and that was with Ledley playing!

Chelsea is tracking David Luiz of Benfica. Any story on that Jon?? I always think that David Luiz is a better defender than Luisao. Hopefully Dunga will have a look at him.

seen a few things connecting him with Tottenham this month but nothing on Chelsea. i didn’t see him when he was at Vitória as they were in Série B at the time
actually, just saw something here in Brazil that said there were reports in the British press linking him with Chelsea – but it was in The Sun so i wouldn’t take too much notice

he’s another one of those players that no one in Brazil has ever heard of. somehow the British press has got his name and blown him up in to something he is probably not
