A Palmeiras side languishing in midtable shocked Santos by pulling off a stunning 4-3 win in the Vila Belmiro. In the best game of the competition so far, Roberto Pinho was the hero with three excellent goals. Palmeiras’ chances of making the playoffs remain slim but the win will be a huge tonic for the Greens and new coach Antonio Carlos Zago who was already feeling the pressure.
Santos appeared to be strolling to another victory after Pará and Neymar struck early in the first period. Palmeiras then mounted a fight back and went in front soon after the break with Diego Souza. Madson equalized but then Neymar was red-carded for the first time in his career after a stupid challenge on Pierre. With three minutes remaining, Pinho hit a fabulous shot for the winner. Léo was also sent off for Palmeiras. A truly cracking game and some great celebrations – especially the piss takes by Palmeiras. See the highlights
Santo André remain second but their seven game winning streak came to an end at the hands of Corinthians in the Arena Barueri. Ronaldo failed to score but set up Dentinho for his fifth in five games, and also provided the pass for a real screamer from Roberto Carlos – his first for the Musketeers. Ricardo Conceição scored for Santo André who looked like taking something from the match until Branquinho was sent off. Corinthians are now fourth. See the highlights
São Paulo moved to third after struggling to beat minnows Rio Branco in the Morumbi. Jorge Wagner and André Luís did the business but it was another poor performance from the Tricolor.
Monte Azul, Rio Branco, Paulista FC and Sertãozinho are the teams in trouble at the bottom.
