Corinthians end Grêmio’s unbeaten run to become early leaders in the Brasiliero

Just two rounds have gone in Brazil’s national championship but Corinthians are the only team yet to drop points following their 2-1 win versus Grêmio in the estádio Olimpico. The São Paulo side had not beaten the tricolor Gaúcho in Porto Alegre since 1999. Ronaldo was absent yet again but the Parque São Jorge club controlled the match from start to finish and goals from Ralf and Souza made Corinthians early front runners in the Brasileirão. Grêmio had their minds on the Copa do Brasil but the easy way they surrendered their 26 game unbeaten run at home in the league would have worried coach Silas. Despite a second leg game in the Libertadores coming up, current champions Flamengo fielded a strong side away to Vitória. The home team, though, rested key players for their Copa do Brasil fixture against Atlético Goianiense. Vagner Love put Fla ahead but a late equalizer by Elkeson rescued a point for Vitória.
Cruzeiro came from two goals down to earn a point at home to Avaí. Cruzeiro have a crucial match with São Paulo coming up in the Libertadores but were stunned by strikes from Pará and Roberto. Wellington Paulista came to the rescue with a brace in the second-half.
Another side that threw away a two-goal lead was Goiás. Goals from Éverton Santos and Amaral had put them in a good position against Internacional. But two from Walter and a winner from Giuliano secured the points for the Porto Alegre club.
São Paulo went down 2-1 in the Morumbi to Botafogo. Léo Lima had given São Paulo the lead. But Antônio Carlos and Renato Cajá were on target and the points went to the travellers.
After three straight losses since he took charge at Fluminense, coach Muricy Ramalho finally picked up points following a 1-0 win over Atlético Goianiense in the Maracanã. Ramalho had Marquinho Mattos to thank for the narrow victory.
Santos have yet to win in the league following their 1-1 draw with Ceará in the Vila Belmiro. Washington had put the new boys in front before Neymar drew the sides level from the penalty spot. The teenager was awarded another spot kick in the second-half but this time failed to score.

What a stinker at the Sao Januario!
Gaucho’s days at Vasco are surely numbered. I don’t know what his problem is with Dodo, but it’s costing them points.
As for Palmeiras, how does a team featuring the likes of Edinho – a Libertadores winner, and Cleiton Xavier – who was being closely watched by Real Madrid not too long ago, are so easily overrun?! Big problems at both clubs…

I don’t know how you managed to stay awake to do your commentary on the Vasco-Palmeiras game. I made it till 75 minutes, then gave up. A truly dreadful game.
And if the Santos- Ceará game is anything to go by, I reckon that incompetent refereeing will again be a recurring theme this season.

haha yes, it was a battle. i thought the first-half was passable but then it went downhill. disappointing to get our first 0-0 so early in the season. we had only two scoreless draws in the Brasileiro last year. in 2006 or 2007, we went all the way from January to September before we got our first scoreless bore!
