Mano Menezes’ rein in charge of Corinthians ended in a 3-1 win over Guarani. The victory lifted the Musketeers back to the top of the table just one point above Fluminense. On Monday, Menezes takes over Brazil and his first job will be to announce the squad to face the USA in August.
After turning down the Brazil post on Friday, Muricy Ramalho’s Fluminense side were held 1-1 by neighbours Botafogo in the estádio Engenhão.
Ceará dropped to 3rd after their 0-0 home draw with Palmeiras. New coach Felipão has yet to make the impact he wanted taking just 2 points from a possible 9 since his return to the Palestra Itália club.
Internacional moved to 4th after a 1-0 win over an insipid Flamengo in the Beira-Rio. With a meeting against São Paulo in the Libertadores coming up, Inter rested key players. But the Porto Alegre side were rarely threatened by the current league champions.
The big derby in the Vila Belmiro was settled by an own-goal from São Paulo’s Renato Silva. Santos created plenty of chances and could have had more goals had it not been for the form of São Paulo keeper Rógerio Ceni.
Botafogo, Grêmio, Atlético Mineiro and Atlético Goianiense occupy the relegation places.
