Corinthians close gap on Fluminense

Corinthians marked Ronaldo’s return to action with a 2-1 win over Vitória in the Pacaembu. The portly striker had missed over 100 days but managed 62 minutes though he failed to score – that was left to Iarley and Paulinho. Kléber Pereira struck for the visitors. The win kept the Musketeers in the hunt for the title as they reduced Fluminense’s lead to three points. See the highlights
Flu were held by São Paulo 2-2 in the Maracanã. Deco scored his first for his new club but São Paulo keeper Rógerio Ceni was the game’s hero scoring one and saving a Washington penalty. See the highlights
Despite the recent departures of Robinho, André Ribeiro and Wesley, and the long-term injury to Paulo Henrique Ganso, Santos were still far too good for bottom club Goiás. Zé Eduardo put away another cracker. Youngster Alan Patrick got the other. See the goals.
Internacional went 4th after they ended Botafogo’s run of five straight wins. Leandro Damião was awarded the goal that perhaps should have gone to leftback Kléber.
At the bottom, Grêmio returned to the relegation zone after a 1-1 draw at Atlético Paranaense. Atlético Mineiro remain in deep trouble after losing at home to Palmeiras 2-1. Atlético Goianiense had the chance to escape the bottom four but were held at home 2-2 by Avaí. Goiás are now propping up the table and have just appointed Dunga’s former assistant, Jorginho, as coach.

Santos and Internacional are each well poised to mount a title challenge in the 2nd half of the season. Even without Ganso, Santos can do well, just so long as Neymar does not take their penalties anymore! Alan Patrick, the newest young player on Santos looks like he can develop into a good midfielder.
I am also impressed with Internacional’s Leandro Damiao, who I had never seen play before he entered and scored in the Libertadores final. But he is a forward who always seems to put himself in the right place at the right time.
But there is no question Deco is proving to e an inspired signing for Fluminense. My question is what happens when Fred comes back from injury? Who sits, Fred, Washington or Emerson?
Between Fluminense, Corinthians, Santos, Internacional and a newly competitive Botafogo, this looks like it can be a very interesting 2nd half of the season.

missed penalty for flu was huge. timão are not going away so flu will have to keep playing good. as for inter they will be missing four big players against leão wednesday. d’alessandro is playing for argentina and bolivar is suspended. but what is the deal with guinazo and alecsandro? must be injury.

Martin – I’m pretty sure it will be Washington who will be left out. Although his scoring record is good, he is increasingly immobile and clunsy. I just hope that at the end of the season Flu don’t regret that missed penalty. Why he took it iinstead of Deco or Conca, I just don’t know.
