Luxemburgo says magician is cleaning up his act
Palmeiras coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo has defended his decision to make former Chile international, Valdivia, captain. The talented player has the nickname of ‘mago’ or magician in Brazil but his dark arts have not been able to keep him out of trouble. In three appearances this season, Valdivia has been mixed up in a number of spats and has already got two yellows. Luxemburgo declared that Valdivia’s behaviour on the pitch has improved but he is still suffering from the negative reputation he picked up last year. Many regard the midfielder as a serial diver and as a player who has far too much to say to the referee. In last Sunday’s game at the Vila Belmiro, the 24 year old was caught on camera swinging an elbow at Santos’ Adriano. Valdivia also performed a wide range of acting skills by feigning injury and rolling around the pitch. It’s fair to say that the player has come in for special attention from the opposition. However, Luxemburgo said that Valdivia will just have to come to terms with it as the likes of Pelé, Zico and current team mate Alex Mineiro had to.
