São Paulo want Spínola ban
São Paulo have made an official complaint to the Federação Paulista de Futebol (the São Paulo state football federation) about the actions of referee Sálvio Spínola during the club’s 0x0 draw with Corinthians on Sunday. The official waved away calls for a penalty when Dagoberto was chopped down by Corinthian’s defender Chicão and later disallowed what appeared to be a legitimate headed goal by Adriano.
São Paulo are now claiming that Spínola has a track record of giving decisions against the club and they want the referee banned from officiating their games.
It is true that Spínola made two very big mistakes at the Morumbi on Sunday and São Paulo have every right to feel aggrieved. But to claim that the referee is blatantly anti São Paulo is an overreaction.
Decisions did not go São Paulo’s way against Corinthians. But things have a way of balancing themselves out over a season and there will be many occasions when São Paulo get the rub of the green.
