Jancarlos to drink from poisoned chalice

Atlético Paranense’s Jancarlos has apparently turned down Santos and Corinthians in favour of league champions, São Paulo.

But the player should know that the right wingback position at the Morumbi could well be cursed.

In recent seasons, former Cruzeiro man, Maurinho, hardly got a game after a series of injuries, and one-time Ecuador international, Reasco, broke his leg in 2007 and is again out of action after going off against Marília in February.

Joílson was brought in from Botafogo at the turn of the year, and Éder was signed from Noroeste just a couple of weeks ago. However, both seem surplus to requirements.

Joílson was picked up on the back of fabulous season he had with the Rio side last year. The wingback was unstoppable when he ran at defences. But under coach Muricy Ramalho, Joílson is being used in an entirely defensive role which, clearly does not suit him.

Éder has been given little time to prove himself as he is in ineligible for the Paulista and his appearances have been limited to a couple of games in the Libertadores.

But it’s not all doom and gloom as there have been some recent successes in this position for São Paulo.

Cicinho got off to a shaky start when he arrived from Atlético Mineiro. But after knuckling down, the player improved. So much so that Real Madrid forked out for 4 million Euros for him in 2006.

Shortly after, São Paulo swooped to pick up Ilsinho on a free transfer after Palmeiras committed the huge error of failing to renew his contract. Ilsinho made an immediate impact and was a regular starter until São Paulo sold him to Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk for around 6 million Euros.

But what is in store for the new boy?

Jancarlos scored twice for Atlético Paranaense in the Campeonato Brasileiro in 2007. But it was his electrifying runs down the right that made his name. Whether he’ll be allowed to repeat this role at a defence-minded São Paulo remains to be seen. The fates of Maurinho, Reasco, Éder and Joílson may also weigh on Jancarlos’ mind. And he can’t say he hasn’t been warned.
