Campeonato Paulista set to go to the wire

kleber-palms.jpgThe picture at the top of the Campeonato Paulista changed once again after round 15. Guaratinguetá still lead but the chasing pack is closing in. With just four games to go to the end of the group stage, only eight points separate the top ten teams and the competition is set for a dramatic finish.

The minnows are again proving just how tough the Paulista is. But there is still a chance that all the big boys could make the semis as even Santos are just four points off the play off places.

Corithians could have gone top at least for the day on Saturday. But Mano Meneze’s limited team were held by a plucky Juventus in the Morumbi.

Noroeste and Barueri got back to winning ways to keep their dreams of qualification alive. Pedrão notched his eleventh goal for Barueri to become the league’s top scorer.

On Sunday morning, Guaratinguetá ensured that they would stay leaders after Michael (pronounced “Michel”) scored the only goal of the game against Bragantino.

But the big game of the weekend was in the estádio Santa Cruz were Palmeiras took on São Paulo.

In a tense match on a treacherous pitch, Adriano put the Morumbi outfit ahead. But former São Paulo man, Kléber, who should have been sent off earlier for elbowing André Dias, scored an excellent equaliser. Palmeiras then took over thanks to São Paulo’s lack of composure. Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s side were awarded three penalties all of which they put away.

In Campinas, rivals Ponte Preta and Guarani met in the estádio Moisés Lucarelli. Ponte came away 4×2 winners to move back to third. Guarani are now in real danger of the drop.
