Adriano hands it to São Paulo

The first legs of the semi-finals of the Campeonato Paulista have left everything in the balance.

In a tight game in the estádio Moisés Lucarelli, Ponte Preta managed to pull off a slight advantage over Guaratinguetá when Eduardo Arroz grabbed the only goal of the game. See the best moments here.

Ponte keeper Aranha was key after making some terrific stops – especially against Alessandro.

The bad news for Sergio Guedes is that his excellent defensive midfielder, Deda, picked up a third yellow and will miss the return.

The result means that Guaratinguetá can progress to the final if they win by one goal in the Estádio Dario Rodrigues Leite next Saturday.

After a controversial match in the estádio Morumbi, São Paulo will take a slim lead into the second leg against Palmeiras. See the action here.

A disappointing crowd of only 37,000 saw Adriano bundle the ball into the back of the net for São Paulo’s opener.

But replays showed the man on loan from Inter Milan clearly handled the ball.

There was no doubt about Adriano’s second though. Palmeiras dithered in defence and São Paulo’s number ten muscled his way in before lifting the ball over Marcos.

Palmeiras looked shell-shocked and São Paulo could have gone on to put the tie beyond Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s team.

But the Palestra Italia side were handed a lifeline when Lenny went down in the area and Alex Mineiro converted the spot kick.

A win by one goal next Sunday will be enough for Palmeiras.

São Paulo’s Richarlyson (or Ricky as he likes to be called) and Zé Luis, plus Palmeiras’ Pierre were booked and will be suspended for the all important return match.
