Palmeiras in the driving seat

This weekend, Palmeiras took a giant stride towards picking up their 22nd Campeonato Paulista after they strolled past Ponte Preta in the first leg of the finals.

Kléber grabbed the only goal of the match but Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s team hardly broke sweat as they controlled the game with ease in the estádio Moises Lucarelli.

Ponte Preta were disappointing in front of their biggest gate of the season, and now the Campinas side has a mountain to climb in the estádio Palestra Itália next weekend.

Though the score and Paulista rules favour Palmeiras, Ponte will be boosted for the second leg with the return of Renato, César, and Eduardo Arroz. Elias remains a doubt. Jean, though, will be suspended.

Palmeiras’ only question mark is over Léo Lima. The midfielder picked up an injury against Sport Recife in the Copa do Brasil and missed the game on Sunday.

Ponte have exceeded all expectations to get this far in the competition. The fact they’ve made it to the finals is even more remarkable when you consider that their monthly wage bill is around US$175,000. In comparison, Palmeiras fork out about US$1.3 million.
