Corinthians cruise into the semis

Corinthians booked their place in the semi-finals of the Copa do Brasil after a 3×0 win against bogey team São Caetano in the estádio Santa Cruz on Tuesday.

Minnows São Caetano had upset Corinthians on a number of occasions in their brief history but the tie was effectively over when centreback Chicão bundled the ball into the back of the net on the 26th minute.

Last year, Chicão put away ten for Figueirense but this was his second in two games for Corinthians.

Chicão’s teammate at Figueirense, André Santos, (photo) made it 2×0 from a set-piece early in the second period. The left-back has been deadly from free-kicks for Mano Meneze’s side this season and rumour has it that a transfer to a Europe is imminent. The 25 year-old hit six in the Campeonato Paulista and now has three in the Copa do Brasil.

The evening was also successful for the out-of-sorts Acosta, who put away the Parque São Jorge outfit’s third after coming off the bench.

The veteran, Tuta, slid one in for São Caetano late on but by then the game was well beyond his team.

See the goals here.

Corinthians will face either Botafogo or Atlético Mineiro who meet on Wednesday.

Sport Recife vs Internacional, and Corinthians AL vs Vasco de Gama will also decide who goes through to the semis this week.
