After battering, Leão cashes in chips

Last Sunday’s 4×0 humiliation at the hands of Cruzeiro has turned out to be Emerson Leão’s final game in charge at Santos.

The Vila Belmiro club announced Leão’s departure on Tuesday and also said that junior team coach, Márcio Fernandes, will be in command for next weekend’s important derby game against São Paulo.

Leão was a league champion with Santos in 2002 when he helped shape the careers of Real Madrid’s Robinho and Werder Bremen’s Diego.

But the coach’s return to the club earlier this year was not met with universal approval and right from the off a contingent of fans at the Vila were calling for his head.

After a poor start in the Campeonato Paulista (São Paulo’s state championship), Santos improved radically and nearly made the playoffs.

Last week though, Santos crashed out of the Libertadores to Mexico’s América and Sunday’s defeat at Cruzeiro was the final straw.

With just three rounds gone, Leão became the fifth coaching change of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
