Flamengo still dominant in rampant threesome

Two's company for Flamengo's Juan and Ibson

Once again the leadership of the Campeonato Brasileiro is divided between frontrunners Flamengo, Grêmio and Cruzeiro.

All three are on 16 points and only Fla’s superior attack is separating the teams.

Grêmio were unfancied before the competition but after early teething problems, Celso Roth has developed a very resilient side.

However, on Sunday, Grêmio had a huge amount of help from referee Guilherme Cereta de Lima who awarded the Porto Alegre team three dodgy penalties against Atlético Paranaense. There was certainly a bit of shirt pulling for the first one. But the official was conned by blatant dives from Roger and William Magrão.

Náutico are the other surprise team of the competition. The Recife side remain in close contact with the leaders after another home win. This time Atlético Mineiro were the victims.

Both São Paulo and Palmeiras got off to a slow start in the new campaign. But the pre-season title favourites have suddenly found some form.

São Paulo made it three wins in a row after seeing off Sport Recife. Sport had the better of the first-half in the estádio Morumbi but decided to settle for a draw in the second period and deserved to come away empty-handed.

Palmeiras picked up their second straight victory when they travelled to Vasco. Goals from Alex Mineiro and Kléber ensured the Palestra Itália side’s first away win.

But things remain very tricky for some of the potential title challengers.

Internacional have lost all four of their away games – the latest at new boys Vitória.

The situation, though, is far worse at Santos who were humiliated in the 4×0 home defeat to fellow strugglers, Goiás. Cuca has now lost two out of his first three games in charge and calls for the coach’s head are already ringing round the Vila Belmiro.

Libertadores finalists, Fluminense, remain rock bottom. The Laranjeiras outfit are now the only team in the Brasileiro yet to win.

    SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!
One for each penalty awarded to Gremio against Atletico Paranaense over the weekend. I think Roger should be called to be part of the Brazilian Diving Team form the Olimpic games! And the ref? Well… I prefer not to use bad language in this public forum…

    p.s. great blog!

the ref was awful – especially because he had a clear view of at least two of the penalty incidents. Roger could be joined by the likes of Thiago Neves, Aloisio, Wagner Diniz etc. maybe i’ll do a feature on the serial divers in the Brasileiro haha

    glad you like the blog
