Flamengo crash again in the Brasileiro

Round 13 of the Campeonato Brasileiro saw Flamengo have the lead at the top reduced to just one point after they lost their second game of the week.
Caio Júnior’s team had already gone down away at Coritiba on Thursday. On Sunday, Fla suffered their second loss at home after Vitória’s Dinei scored the only goal in the estádio Maracanã.
Flamengo are clearly struggling to cope with the absence of top scorer Marcinho who was sold to the UAE’s Al Jazeera last week. So much so that it took 34 minutes before the Rio side got a real shot on goal – and that came from centreback Fabio Luciano. Diego Tardelli did put the ball in the back of the net for the league leaders but the goal was ruled out for offside. See the move here
Now only 3 points separate the top five and Flamengo could find themselves knocked off the top midweek. Many are eager to see if to see if this is the end of Fla’s reign or just a blip. But Flamengo have a great chance to show their mettle at strugglers Portuguesa on Wednesday.
Vitoria had lost their previous two outings against Fluminense and São Paulo but now climb back to 4th.
Grêmio picked up an important win against title rivals Cruzeiro. The Porto Alegre outfit bombarded Fábio’s goal in the first 45 minutes but the only strike to find the back of the net was from rightback, Paulo Sergio. Grêmio could have had a hatful but for the brilliance of Fábio. But Grêmio failed to maintain the same pace in the second period and Cruzeiro had chances to draw level. However, Celso Roth’s side held on to move into 2nd place.
São Paulo closed in on the leading pack but they were less than convincing against Botafogo in the estádio Morumbi. Keeper Rogério Ceni scored his first goal of the season from the penalty spot to give São Paulo the lead. But Botafogo took over in the second period and had chances to take all the points. Former São Paulo man, Carlos Alberto, came back to haunt his old club and drew Botafogo level. But a late goal by Dagoberto secured the points for Muricy Ramalho’s side who moved to 5th.
Palmeiras lost yet another game away from the Palestra Italia. Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s team have won just once on the road (Vasco 2-0). This time they went down at strugglers Goiás 3-2. To rub salt into the wounds, Kléber and Denílson were red-carded and will miss Thursday’s home derby vs Santos.
On the whole, it was a good round for the five teams at the bottom who all won.
Ipatinga thumped Portuguesa 4-1. Portuguesa then sacked coach Vagner Benazzi and became the tenth club in the Brasileiro to change their man on the bench. Valdir Espinosa has already been appointed as Benazzi’s replacement.
Atlético Mineiro came back from two goals down to beat Coritiba 3-2. Coritiba though were down to nine after Rubens Cardoso and Marlos had been sent off. But Atlético coach Gallo remains on borrowed time in Belo Horizonte.
Fluminense scraped a narrow 1-0 win against an in-form Figueirense thanks to a late strike from Thiago Neves.
And Santos finally ended their run of ten games without a win when they took all 3 points against Sport in the Vila.
