Grêmio knock Flamengo off the top

July 24, 2008 at 22:54 2 comments

Round 14 of the Campeonato Brasileiro finished with a new leader after Grêmio demolished Figueirense 7-1 and Flamengo were held 2-2 by Portuguesa.

Hat-tricks from Perea and substitute Reinaldo, plus one from Marcel did the damage for Grêmio away in the estádio Orlando Scarpelli. A penalty from Claiton Xavier was scant consolation for Figueirense. See the goals here

This was the highest scoring game of the Brasileiro and ended Flamengo’s run of nine rounds as top dogs. It was also Figueirense’s first loss at home.

Grêmio become only the fourth leader of the competition following in the footsteps of Náutico, Cruzeiro and Flamengo. On Sunday, Grêmio take on Palmeiras in the estádio Olímpico.

On Wednesday, Flamengo made it three games without a win after their draw in the estádio Canindé. Fla could have won it but Portuguesa keeper Sergio twice saved a penalty from Ibson.

Vitória continue to demonstrate that their 3rd place is no fluke after they breezed past Náutico thanks to two goals from the ever impressive, Marquinhos.

Six goals went in the first-half in the match between Palmeiras and archenemies Santos in the estádio Palestra Itália. But that was it for the scoring and the game finished 4-2 in favour of Palmeiras. Cuca was sent off and that could the end of what has been a torrid time for the Santos coach since he took over in early June. See the goals here

Palmeiras move to 4th.

Cruzeiro slipped up at home losing 1-0 to lowly Goiás. Iarley’s free-kick was enough to sink Adílson Baptista’s men to down to 5th in the table.

Nilmar grabbed a brace for Internacional against São Paulo. With the score at 0-0, Dagoberto had a goal ruled out for offside – though the forward himself was not in an offside position. See the incident and the best moments here

The relegation zone now contains three Brasileiro winners Atletico Mineiro, Fluminense and Santos. Ipatinga remain bottom.
