Kerlon Chievo bound

Check out Brazil’s newest star in the making here in Brazil: the talent factory 2010

Cruzeiro’s talented but injury-plagued midfielder, Kerlon, is on the verge of completing a 1.3 million euro move to Italy’s Chievo.

The 20-year-old player made his debut for Cruzeiro in May 2005 and has appeared for Brazil’s Under 17s.

Kerlon Moura Souza is famous for his ‘seal dribble’ – here here – and here – but the move doesn’t always go down well with all his fellow professionals and the jury is still out on whether Kerlon is actually a good player or just a ball juggler.

European media (especially in the north) are not a big fan of trickery. It probably has to do something with the leftovers from the protestant religion: anything fancy is not done and seen as egodriven.

The two best footballers of the last five years, Ronaldinho and Christiano Ronaldo were mocked because of their outrageous skills (especially stepovers) and ineffective play. In both cases they finally got it right.

I don’t think it is fair to emphasize the seal dribble
when it comes to Kerlon. His particular skill seems very effective, he just hasn’t lived up to the other expectations, so the dribble gets all the attention.

At the U17 South American Championship in 2005 he was very effective, so I hope he can do that again, stay away from injuries and live up to his promise. I think Chievo is a smart choice. Small, intelligent little club.

Somehow I think Kerlon should stay away from the “seal dribble” until he becomes an established player.
