Goiás blow the championship wide open

The fight for the Campeonato Brasileiro is back on after Grêmio lost to Goiás and Palmeiras won at Cruzeiro.

Grêmio could have gone an unreachable eight points clear at the top by the end of the round.  Instead, the Porto Alegre side went down to their first home defeat of the season after Goiás came from behind to take the points in the estádio Olímpico.

Grêmio had taken the lead through centreback Léo in the first-half. But plucky Goiás, who were 16 points behind Grêmio at the start of the round, did not lose their composure and came back with goals from Paulo Baier and Vitor.

Grêmio’s loss meant that the winner of the tie between Palmeiras in the estádio Mineirão would close the gap to just three points.

With the top scorers of both teams missing, it was always going to be tight and in the end a splendid finish from Diego Souza in the first-half decided the match. Palmeiras were reduced to ten men after Lenny received a second yellow but Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s team held on for an invaluable win.

Internacional went in front away at Botafogo thanks to Alex’s strike. D’Alessandro then doubled the score after a mazy run. Botafogo fought back with André Luís – who was later sent off. But Inter pulled off a rare away win and Botafogo blew the chance to go third.

São Paulo came out on top in their clash with Flamengo at the estádio Morumbi. Goals from Dagoberto and Hugo moved São Paulo to 5th but Muricy Ramalho’s outfit remain seven points behind Grêmio.

A power cut temporarily halted the game between Vitória and Coritiba. The points stayed in Bahia as Marcelo Cordeiro grabbed the only goal of the match.

Kléber Pereira put Santos in front in their relegation battle with Fluminense. Bida made it 2-0. Romeu got a late goal at the end of normal time but it wasn’t enough for Flu to lose their first match under Cuca.

Vasco’s crushing 3-1 home to defeat against Náutico saw the Rio team back in the relegation zone.

Ipatinga climbed off the bottom for the first time since round 13 after they beat Atlético Mineiro 3-2 in the estádio Ipatingão. Their replacement is Portuguesa who seem destined for Série B after losing 2-0 at Atlético Paranaense.
