Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s chance of taking a sixth Brasileiro became a little more remote on Saturday after Palmeiras were taken apart by Fluminense 3-0 in the Maracanã.

First-half goals from Carlinhos, Maurício (OG) and Júnior Cesar earned Flu a vital three points that lifted them out of the relegation zone. The result, though, left Palmeiras four points behind leaders Grêmio but the two will meet in the Palestra Itália on November 9th.

Cruzeiro also lost ground after they went down 1-0 at strugglers Atlético Paranaense.

Botafogo put another nail in Ipatinga’s coffin after the Rio side came away with a

3-0 win from the Ipatingão. However, Botafogo remain six points off the Libertadores places.

Internacional were held 2-2 by Atlético Mineiro and all but kissed goodbye to a top four finish.

Santos have finally begun to put something of a run together. On Saturday, they swept aside Figueirense 3-0 and in so doing, put some distance between themselves and the bottom four.

The battle to avoid relegation ended in stalemate in Recife were Náutico and Portuguesa drew 1-1.
