Muricy Ramalho’s São Paulo can make it a record three titles in a row and win their sixth Brasileiro if they beat Fluminense in the Morumbi next weekend.

Sunday’s 2-1 win away at Vasco, combined with Grêmio’s shock 4-2 defeat at Vitória, means São Paulo will be crowned champions in the penultimate round of the competition if they do the business against a Fluminense side not completely safe from relegation.

In a packed estádio São Januário, Jorge Wagner struck first for the visitors with a superb free kick. Madson gave Vasco some hope after his shot came off Miranda and looped over Rogério Ceni and into the net. But early in the second-half, Jorge Wagner sent in a corner and Hugo’s low shot beat Rafael for the winner. See the highlights here

Vasco remain in deep trouble but could still save themselves from the drop with wins over Coritiba (A) and Vitória (H).

São Paulo finished the round top but at one point on Sunday, the league looked very different.  Grêmio had travelled north to Vitória with a chance of taking back the leadership. And things looked good for the Porto Alegre side when Souza’s cross was turned in by Vitória’s Anderson Martins. But from then on it was all Vitória with Leandro Domingues, Williams, Jackson and Marcelo Cordeiro all on target. Ex São Paulo man, Souza, managed a consolation goal near the close but the title has surely slipped from Grêmio’s hands.  See the highlights here

Cruzeiro moved to third after a thrilling 3-2 win over Libertadores rivals Flamengo in Belo Horizonte. The much-coveted Ramires snatched the winner with five minutes to go. See the highlights here.

Palmeiras were expected to beat bottom side Ipatinga in the Palestra Itália and Kléber and Pierre goals were enough to lift Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s men back into the top four. Ipatinga are not yet down but surely the final nail will come next weekend against Grêmio.

Also at the bottom, Santos were on the end of a 5-1 thrashing by Coritiba. Keirrison grabbed four and brought his tally to twenty for the season. Atlético Paranaense scrambled a point away at Botafogo after drawing 2-2. But it’s looking grim for Portuguesa who could only manage a 0-0 draw at home to Goiás.
