Dentinho wins it against Santos

Sunday’s fixture between archenemies Corinthians and Santos was billed as the battle between the past and future of Brazilian football. On one side was Corinthian’s World Cup, veteran Ronaldo. On the other, a skinny 17-year-old called Neymar.

The hype surrounding the game had generated a colossal amount of interest around the world for this Campeonato Paulista confrontation.

But tight marking by both teams neither really allowed either Ronaldo or Neymar to flourish and it was left to another promising youngster, Dentinho, to settle the match.

The 1-0 score left Santos out of the top four and Corinthians in second place – just four points behind leaders Palmeiras who were held 1-1 away to relegation-threatened Guaratinguetá.

Wellington Amorim had deservedly given his team the lead against Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s charges. But Edson Rocha pulled down Ortigoza early in the second period and Diego Souza fired home the equalizer from the penalty spot. See the goals here

São Paulo also dropped points in their 1-1 draw at Paulista FC. Rodrigo had put the away team in front. But Zé Carlos earned Paulista a precious point. See the goals here

São Paulo take on Palmeiras next Saturday at 16:10 local time. And you can see that one with us live from the estádio Morumbi. There’s no Sunday match as Brazil are in action against away to Ecuador.

Portuguesa moved into fourth after goals from Bruno Rodrigo and Edno gave them a 2-0 win at Ituano.

Santo André remained in contention after a 2-2 draw at Botafogo.
