Nilmar wonder goal sinks Corinthians

The Campeonato Brasileiro 2009 got underway this weekend.

League champions São Paulo lost 1-0 away to Fluminense thanks to an early strike from Mauricio.

But there were wins for title contenders Cruzeiro, who saw off Flamengo 2-0 in Belo Horizonte with goals from Kléber and Ramires, and Palmeiras who had to come from behind to beat Coritiba 2-1 in the Palestra Itália with strikes from Willians and Keirrison (his 20th goal in 27 outings this year).

Two other giants, Corinthians and Internacional clashed in the Pacaembu. With a match vs Fluminense in the Copa do Brasil coming up, Corinthians’ Mano Menezes fielded a weakened side. Only 15,000 turned up at the Pacaembu but those who were there will remember the day for a long time to come. Former Parque São Jorge man, Nilmar, scored one of the best goals of his career in his team’s 1-0 win – and this is bound to intensify the bidding war for the forward’s services. See the goal here

Grêmio thought they had it in the bag against Santos in the estádio Olímpico when centreback Réver struck late. But Molina hit a perfect free-kick to earn Santos a point in Porto Alegre. No one enjoyed the goal more than Wágner Mancini who was sacked by Grêmio earlier this season. See the goals here
