Atlético Mineiro go top

Celso Roth’s revitalization of Atlético Mineiro continued on Sunday with a 3-0 victory over Náutico in Belo Horizonte. The win, plus Internacional’s 0-0 draw at home to Vitória, was enough to lift Atlético into pole position on goal difference. Júnior, Diego Tardelli and Márcio Araújo did the damage.

Palmeiras moved to 3rd after seeing off title rivals Cruzeiro 3-1 in the Palestra Itália.

Bernardo had given the visitors the lead. But goals from Marcão (though replays showed his effort did not cross the line) and a brace from Keirrison (his 23 in all competitions) secured Palmeiras the points. See the game here

The biggest score of the day came at the Couto Pereira where strugglers Coritiba thrashed Flamengo 5-0. Things started badly for Fla when Wellinton (that’s the right spelling) put through his own net. Goals from Marcos Aurélio, Leozinho and two from Batata were more than enough to overwhelm the Rio club. Keeper Bruno was at fault for four of the goals spilling the ball on each occasion. Adriano wearing the number 92 shirt (perhaps for his weight?) was a virtual bystander and came close just once.  See the game here

São Paulo’s poor run continued. On Saturday they were held 1-1 by Santo André. Marcelinho Carioca had put the ABC outfit in front at the Morumbi. Borges (who else?) got the equalizer.

At the bottom, Botafogo, Barueri and Atlético Paranaense managed to pick up their first wins of the campaign. Botafogo beat Santos 2-0 in the Engenhão. Santos coach Vagner Mancini said his side’s performance was their worst in his 25 games in charge – and he was right – Santos were dire. Atlético won 1-0 at Sport Recife with new coach Waldemar Lemos getting off to a great start. Barueri saw off Avaí 3-1. the latter are now the only club in the league without a win and not surprisingly they are propping up the table.
