Are Chelsea about to splash out on Neymar?

Neymar waiting for an offer

Rumours in Brazil suggest that Chelsea are about to offer around RS$68 million (£25 million) for Santos’ highly-talented forward, Neymar. The 18-year-old has been on the radar of all the top European clubs since he made his professional debut last year. Neymar’s abundance of skill and confidence even against big name opponents has turned him into one of the world’s most exciting players. His style of play and his nonchalant attitude has always reminded me of Paul Gascoigne and George Best at their peaks. But while he’s got all the ability to compete with at the top, Neymar can disappear from games for long periods. Chelsea, or any other team interested in the forward, should also be aware that the teenager still has a lot of growing up to do. Neymar enjoys being at Santos and has been a star there since he was 12. He loves the life in the city and is used to the generally laidback approach to professional football in Brazil and a move now would probably be too early for the youngster. While £25 million seems a lot for an 18-year-old, Neymar has immense potential and that figure could easily double within a year or so.  Buying the forward but leaving him at Santos to mature, might be a smart move. Loaning him out to a Portuguese side where the language would not be a problem and the culture is similar to Brazil would be another option.  Chelsea, though, are all too aware that sooner or later, one of their competitors will move for Neymar. So, if the London club are serious about the player, they had better act quickly.
