Cruzeiro beat Fluminense in battle for leadership of the Brasileiro

One goal from Cruzeiro’s Wellington Paulista was enough to see off Fluminense in the estádio João Havelange in Uberlândia. The result left Cruzeiro two points clear of Fluminense and hoisted the Foxes to the top of the table for the first time this season. See the highlights

At the start of the day, Corinthians were in with a chance of finishing the round as leaders and were expected to make easy work of bottom four side Atlético Goianiense. Things were going according to plan when Leandro Castán struck within a minute. But from then on it was all downhill for the Musketeers. The Dragons fought back to take a 4-1 lead before Corinthians made it a more respectable 4-3 at the end of the match. No wins in five, though, has caused unrest in the Parque São Jorge camp. Even so, it came as a huge shock when coach Adílson Baptista resigned after just 17 games in charge. Many will question Batista’s somewhat premature departure. Despite their dip in form, Corinthians are only five points behind the new leaders and have a game in hand (vs Vasco).  See the highlights

At the opposite end of the table, current champions Flamengo were leading 2-0 away at fellow strugglers Avaí before being pegged back to 2-2. Fla are now five points clear of the relegation zone and face a very tough run in.

Vitória slipped back into trouble after losing 1-0 at Goiás.

Atlético Mineiro could have escaped the bottom four for the first time in 19 rounds but lost 1-0 away at Internacional.
